Grow your own

Or grow the grass yourself, from seed

A bag of potting mix, a packet of seed and two to three weeks. It grows straight in the Grassifier, so there is nothing to cut, nothing to fit and nothing to collect.

Four steps

How to grow it

Ours went from seed to a usable patch in a fortnight. Climate and how you grow it decide the pace - two to three weeks is typical.

1

Line the tray

Put a porous liner in the bottom of the Grassifier. If you are using plain plastic liner instead, cut holes in it first so the water can still get away.

2

Add the soil

One 25L bag of potting mix, spread level across the liner.

3

Sow the seed

Scatter the seed evenly over the soil, then cover it with a thin layer of mix. A dusting, not a burial - the seed still needs light.

4

Water it lightly, daily

Damp, never soaked. It needs very little at the start. A moisture meter takes the guesswork out of it if you would rather not judge by eye.

Worth knowing

Before you start

What it costs

A bag of potting mix and a packet of seed, and you have enough left over for the next few goes. Cheaper again than the $7 a ready-grown piece costs at the nursery.

How long it takes

Usually two to three weeks, but it depends on your climate and how you go about it. Warmth and light are what drive it, so a sunny spot in summer is far quicker than a cold room in July - a grow light or a heat lamp evens that out. Keep it somewhere bright while it establishes, water it lightly each day, then use it exactly as you would a bought piece.

Or just buy a piece

If you would rather not wait, a ready-grown piece is approx. $7 from your local nursery. The turf guide has who stocks it in your state, the piece size they sell, and the one cut that makes it fit.

Anywhere, anytime

Buy a ready-grown piece for approx. $7, or grow your own for less. Either way the Grassifier keeps it alive for up to 2-3 months on average, and there is nothing to subscribe to.
